What to look for when selecting a new web platform

If you’re committed to conquering your content management issues, ensure that you invest your money and time wisely by considering these concerns:

  1. Do we need a Content Management System(CMS)?
Firstly, consider the frequency of your updates. If they are few and far between, contracting a dependable agency to update your site quickly and affordably makes more sense than purchasing a CMS. If you update on a regular basis, however, then a CMS has its advantages. What CMS platform does the agency recommend and why? Do they use it themselves? Their recommendations should follow from a keen understanding of your business – have they asked you the right questions to know what you actually need?
  2. How important is the CMS platform’s scalability?
Very important, if you plan to expand the site, add functionality or incorporate new elements in future. If you do, your platform must readily accommodate new modules and features, and continue to function seamlessly. Ask your agency to show you robust and scalable sites they’ve built. And if they haven’t bothered to learn about your plans for growth, know that they’re in no position to recommend any platform’s ability to enhance your business – now or in future.
  3. What should I look for regarding ongoing support and maintenance?
Consider the services an agency offers, and which tools they use, to ensure that your Web site remains whole and secure. Is there a maintenance department dedicated to customer support? What is their turnaround time on bug and error fixes? Do they offer the advantages of a Service Level Agreement? Is there actual Quality Assurance? You should feel wholly satisfied with your agency’s level of support – if service is poor then the headaches of dealing with them likely outweigh the benefits of even the best content management platform.
